Integrative Multi-System Psychiatric Assessment

Counseling Image Takashi Matsuki, M.D. Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist Office Image

Psychological well-being of a person usually consists of multiple inter-related systems, such as lifestyle, cultural, social, behavioral, medical, psychiatric, psychological, and spiritual. With his training in traditional psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and primary care medicine, Dr. Matsuki’s approach is to work within multiple systems and completely understand the issues affecting the patient, in order to resolve those issues with a well-developed, multi-system plan.

Initial assessment by Dr. Matsuki takes one or two sessions of approx. one hour each. This comprehensive private assessment is designed to explore in depth the patient’s present condition, current stressors, medical history, mental health history, and life history. Diagnostic testing is often recommended to determine if any medical issue that may manifest itself as a psychiatric illness should be ruled out, or whether or not any nutritional deficiencies should be examined for treatment with supplements and life style modifications.

After Dr. Matsuki completes the evaluation, his recommendations will be made as part of personalized treatment plan for the patient, which suggests frequency and modes of treatment (including psychotherapy, exercise program, diet modification, life style modification, medication management, supplement, and management of underlying medical condition). When Dr. Matsuki determines that the patient needs a treatment outside the scope of his practice, the patient will be referred to appropriate specialists.

Medication Management

Generally based on his advanced training on and extensive knowledge of medication options available, Dr. Matsuki only chooses the lowest doses of medication possible for restoring the balanced functioning. When offering a treatment program, Dr. Matsuki is always willing to work with the patient until a mutual consent on the program is achieved. While some patients may receive treatment with medication management alone, other patients may receive treatment with medication and psychotherapy combined, for example.

Psychotherapy

As you may know, medications may address only a part of the issues even if the severity of symptoms can be mitigated by medications. The key to achieve the most successful outcome is ongoing psychotherapy combined with medication management, in addition to educating yourself on medication management. Psychotherapy is the best way to provide a safe, confidential, and supportive therapeutic environment if you wish to know yourself and change your life for better. Dr. Matsuki’s specialized training enables him to help patients with various psychological disorders to understand and change complicated, deep-seated emotional and relationship issues that are often based on unconscious processes. As a result, symptoms will be reduced and distress will be mitigated. Psychotherapy could be of great benefit to you when you experience a loss of meaning in life or seek a greater sense of fulfillment.
